The Worlding podcast is a series of conversations between Renae Shadler and artists, philosophers and scientists exploring the reciprocal relationship of how we are both shaping and being shaped by our surroundings. Worlding aims to foster a complex and layered society that is founded in empathy and lives in dialogue with its surroundings, as opposed to privileging the individual human experience above all else.
Within each episode the guests discuss their intake on the core concept and offer a worlding proposition to share their research with listeners. This proposition is a playful invitation to experience ideas through the body, such as relating to a plant or physicalising the space around you.
Alongside exploring our more-than human surroundings, Worlding traces interpersonal connections by inviting each guest to recommend an important person for them to be interviewed next, similar to a string figure. This aspect of the show is driven by personal connections and gives Worlding an organic life of its own enabling it to grow in unpredictable ways.
Each series is made up of three episodes, with the first guest being a Berlin-based artist curated by Renae that then passes the mic on to the next speaker, and then the next. The podcast ran from August 2020 till March 2023 with 33 guests contributing to the project.
Beginning Series 1 is Dr. Susanne Schmitt who works across ethnographic and artistic practices, often with a multispecies lens.
Beginning Series 2 is Jule Flierl, a dance artist working with choreography and the voice.
Beginning Series 3 is Samuel Hertz, a composer and environmental researcher.
Beginning Series 4 is Diego Agulló, an independent researcher and multifaceted artist, interested in the relation between body and the event.
Beginning Series 5 is Sandra Blatterer, a visual artist and lighting designer researching ‘Imaginary Spaces’.
Beginning Series 6 is Catherine Rose Evans, a visual artist and writer whose work focuses on geologic time and where this intersects with our own human timescales.
Beginning Series 7 is Siegmar Zacharias, a performance artist and researcher whose life work is to create collective and public places for grieving.
Beginning Series 8 is Jacob Hühn, a Berlin born and raised shapeshifter dedicated to enabling Moos Berlin - an international residency, co-living community and event space.
Beginning Series 9 is Martha Hincapié Charry, a BIPoC Colombian artist - with Quimbaya ancestors, who researches the concept of home and community during the current climate chaos and disappearance of biodiversity.
Beginning Series 10 is Kat Válastur, a choreographer and performer, who combines film and performance to create new speculative worlds shaped by our present.
Beginning Series 11 is Oliver Thie, a visual artist working at the intersection of art and science who is studying and communicating the individuality of things.
