Can You See What We See? is an multidisciplinary walking tour inviting local residents to see their town from a traveler’s perspective. During the tour the audience experience audio works, video installations and participatory invitations that encourage them to experience their town through fresh eyes. Can You See What We See? aims to make the familiar unfamiliar by investigating our relationship to place, time and those around us through the context of travel. Inspired by Alain de Botton’s book, The Art of Travel this experience encourages audiences to walk slower, think deeper and engage with their surroundings in new and unexpected ways.
First commissioned as part of Gippsland Arts Festival (Australia, 2015), Renae recreates the work with local participants and touring artists in partnership with each presenter, local community and site. This process includes an open call for paid positions aimed at local artists who are new to the area, a series of development workshops and public presentations. Can You See What We See? is a sustainable touring model that creates professional pathways for local artists as well as providing new opportunities to extend regional artistic neworks.
