Sensing the digital is an ongoing research project by and with the Berlin-based performance group air touch rock. The collective was formed in 2017 by choreographers / dancers Mirjam Sögner, Renae Shadler and composer / environmental researcher Samuel Hertz.
Sensing the digital is a site-responsive social choreography created for outdoor spaces. It explores virtual realities and imaginatively physicalises the intangible entity, the world wide web. The project asks: how does online feel? And more specifically, how can we sense and articulate what is not physically present?
Still in development, the project is being created with the online Locative Audio program Sonic Maps which allows audio tracks to be embedded within a map that are triggered via GPS once the participant enters that location. Sensing the digital includes three bespoke audio experiences for participants to experience simultaneously.
Conceived especially in response to the COVID-19 restrictions, the project offers a shared performative experience by allowing participants to relate to one another’s actions and their environment while maintaining social distancing. Sensing the digital embraces the 1.5 meter social distancing radius by exploring what fills this intimate space, rather than what it omits.
