Naming It is a research project by dancers / choreographers Renae Shadler and David Bloom that was initiated when Renae stood up in Canadian dance icon, Benoît Lachambre’s workshop which they were both attending in 2015, and started talking about how some people had much better teeth than others and what that implied about their economic, social, and national backgrounds. David instantly asked Renae to work with him.
Naming It is an improvisational practice based on the reciprocal relationship of Language and Movement to Reality. Naming things not only separates them from one another and gives them identity, but also can bring them into being. The limits of what can and can’t be named are also explored in the methodology drawing on the artists’ text-based and somatic practice. In their research, Renae and David touch upon mantras, magic, the writing of philosopher Alva Noë, politics of transparency, and the Book of Genesis.
