Renae (*1989, Australia) is a Berlin-based choreographer, performer and researcher who experiences her life and work as a web of interrelations. Her artistic research is anchored in the post-humanist discourse and explores the reciprocal process of how we are both shaping and being shaped by our environment. This informs Renae’s performance work, such as a project that traces unconscious connections between strangers in train stations (In-ya-ear 2012) and a solo about her personal connection to the arctic landscape (RESTORE 2018).
Her work spans a variety of contexts; from dance on stage and major festivals, to museum events and outdoor public engagement projects. Current creations relate to and learn with diverse human and non-human bodies, such as people with disabilities in SKIN - a duet with Roland Walter that was selected for Aerowaves 2021 and Tanzplattform Deutschland 2022, as well as a trilogy entitled Dance meets Aerocene - a collaboration with aerosolar sculptures (Part 1: Under my Gaze 2022, Part 2: Greyline 2024).
Renae’s work has been presented and developed at Dancehouse (Australia), Palais de Tokyo Museum (France), Tanzhaus Zürich (Switzerland), Radialsystem and HELLERAU - European Center for the Arts (Germany), among others. She has received the George Fairfax Memorial Award (2020), the Marten Bequest Theater Fellowship (2019-21) and was a danceWEB scholar (2014).
Since 2015 Renae has been refining her Worlding choreographic practice which combines somatics, contemporary dance and environmental research to dissolve the perceived border between internal and external processes, between bodies and worlds. This has manifested in the Worlding podcast series and inspired the ongoing experience-based knowledge lab, Moving across Thresholds which Renae curates and often facilitates.
As founder of Renae Shadler & Collaborators, (2012 till present), a project-based company creating multidisciplinary performances with touring artists and non-professional participants, Renae has developed new work with regional, urban and international communities. Bespoke festival presentations include; Sense Festival - Radialsystem (Germany), Junction Arts Festival (Australia), Light in Winter Festival (Australia) and the Australian Exhibit at the Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design & Space (Czech Republic), among others.
Her engagements as a performer within the visual arts, contemporary dance and theatre include Novoflot Opera Company (Germany), Alexandra Pirici (Romania), Dewey Dell (Italy) and Australian companies; PVI Collective, Triage Live Art Collective, Maybe_Together and Blackhole Theatre. As an acting coach Renae has worked with Mirjam Sögner (Germany/Austria), Clark Beaumont (Australia) and on the creation of Asobi choreographed by Kaori Ito and produced by Les Ballets C de la B (Belgium).
