This project has been supported by Platform Youth Theatre, Melbourne Fringe and was developed at the Richmond Theatrette with support from Yarra City Council.
In the form of a theatrical trivia night, Y? investigates generation-Y’s social stereotyping through online platforms. Set in a nightclub late at night the audience enter to popband, the Scissor Sisters, and are asked to form teams based on their self-identified social stereotype. They are then led by performer/facilitators through five live art events that use a hybrid of digital media and ontology to investigate Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and Spotify - each activity further questioning the logic behind identity politics and the language and mediums that reinforce and perpetuate them.
Y? was created in partnership with Platform Youth Theater, a theater company for 16 to 26 year olds based in the northern suburbs of Melbourne. The project’s diverse cast included performers from migrant backgrounds as well as Thomas Banks, an actor with cerebral palsy.
“The conversation about social mediums and stereotypes was important, relevant, and completely applicable" - Nina Barry
